The "CAM Journal Club" is an informal seminar series, where interested students, postdocs and faculty meet weekly to discuss research papers. The goal is to help students to get some broader exposure on recent research trends outside of their own research group and build up their presentation skills. The students, and sometimes faculty and postdocs, will take turns to present recent research papers (not necessarily of their own, but closely related to their own research interests) on numerical methods that are of common interests and are more advanced than those covered in classes.
All graduate students, postdocs and faculty in CAM are welcome to join the club. Second-year and more senior graduate students are urged to give presentations. First-year graduate students are also welcome to attend the meetings when seats are available.
A partial list of potential topics will include:
second and high-order numerical solutions of PDEs with complex/moving geometries (immersed interface, embedded boundary, coupled interface methods, ghost fluid method, WENO, generalized finite element methods, generalized finite difference methods, meshless methods,
hybrid particle-mesh techniques, etc.)
symplectic high order time stepping algorithms
Lie-algebraic methods for the numerical description of dynamics
numerical linear algebra (sparse solvers and multigrid solvers)
mathematical ideas and numerical methods for the reduction of system complexity
methods for multi-physics and multi-scale coupling
numerical methods for image processing and geometric analysis
parallel computing (
scalable and parallel numerical algorithms,
task mapping, CPU+GPU computations, and automatic parallelization)
Monte Carlo methods
The focus of these presentations will be mostly on methodology and algorithms. There can be some application aspects for the talks, but the applications will mainly serve as motivations (because of the diversity of applications).
Specific talks and papers can be suggested by faculty and by students (with faculty's approval).
